Group partners Lagos on empowerment, trains 2,600 residents

A non-governmental organisation, Sahara Foundation, says it is organising vocational training for 2,600 Lagos residents to support the state government’s efforts on job creation.

It said the beneficiaries would enjoy a free skill acquisition programme at three centres in Lagos, adding that the programme was meant to enhance economic growth and development in Nigeria. In a statement on Monday, the Executive Director, Sahara Group, Tonye Cole, stated that the group believed people could be empowered to excel beyond their limitations when exposed to the right platforms and opportunities.

“A total of 2,600 beneficiaries in Lagos now have access to capacity- building opportunities annually through vocational centres supported by a leading energy giant, Sahara Group. The centres, which include the Lagos State Vocational Training and Skills Acquisition Centre, Surulere, and the Oshodi Community Vocational Centre, received support in 2014 and 2015 from the Sahara Foundation.

“In each of these 2,600 people, innate idea that can create value for different people across the globe resides. Sahara Group is proud of the achievements some of the beneficiaries are already recording in their various disciplines.

We are privileged to witness firsthand, the transformation of everyday people whose greatest attributes are their passion and commitment to pursue and realise their dreams,” Cole was quoted as saying.

Cole added that the major objective of the project was to provide opportunities for pupils and adults in the Oshodi area of Lagos State and its environs, to gain vocational skills to support gainful employment or start up businesses.
