Military rains bombs on Ijaw militants in South-West

Over 100 militants killed, many injured –Source Fidelis Soriwei, Samson Folarin and Afeez Hanafi

No fewer than 100 people suspected to be militants have been reportedly killed as the Nigerian military on Saturday continued the aerial bombardment of Fatola, the base of militants and pipeline vandals in the Arepo area of Ogun State.

One of our correspondents who was around the scene of the incident at the time, observed that the attack started at about 12pm and lasted for about 30 minutes.

Our correspondent counted at least eight missiles fired by a fighter jet, which flew across the creek at intervals. Another aircraft was observed hovering around the area. Residents, who were caught unawares, ran for their lives due to the ground-shaking effects of the missiles. Business activities were grounded and many residents fled their houses for fear of being hit by missiles.

A resident who was on the road when the shots were fired said the Saturday attack was more intense than previous air raids. Speaking on condition of anonymity, she said, “The air raid started on Thursday evening.

It was just a missile that was released, but the effect was serious. On Friday evening, another airplane which flew across the creek released gunfire which lasted for some minutes. I could hear the shots as if they were fired close at me. But the Thursday and Friday attacks were child’s play compared with that of today (Saturday).

“The aircraft releasing the missiles had three short wings with a sharp mouth. It maintained a visible presence in the sky and anytime it wanted to fire, it flew down as if it was about to crash. I never knew the military had such a weapon.

” Another resident, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that he lay flat in his apartment during the Saturday attack.

He said, “I was alone in the house with my son. The boy shook with fright every time a missile landed. I carried him and lay flat on the floor. The missiles shook the whole ground.

I am not sure if I would  continue to live here because of this. My landlord left with his family yesterday.

” A source close to the millitants told Illumination News that the missiles levelled the base of the militants, adding that more than 100 people were killed. He said, “The whole place has been levelled.

From the information I just gathered, those killed today (Saturday) cannot be less than 100.

I am aware that some of them (the militants) are presently in the waters where they are hiding.

They are making calls and seeking escape routes from the place.” Another source, who asked the military to intensify attacks on the militants, said the militants abandoned their ammunition in the creeks. He said the men could regroup and cause greater havoc if given a breathing space.

He said, “The heat is on them.

One of them said it was because of the kidnap of a monarch in Lagos (Oniba of Iba) that the missile attack was intensified.

“He said he had asked his colleagues to release the monarch, but they didn’t listen.

I am aware that the monarch will be released between today and tomorrow, if he has not been killed. “The military should deploy secret officials in Ibafo, Pakuro, Wawa and other villages. I believe those places will be their next hideouts. They must not be given any breathing space.

If they are allowed to regroup, there will be serious problems.” The acting Director of Defence Information, Brig-General Rabe Abubakar, confirmed the air strikes. He said, “The joint operation will continue until the area is secure and free from all forms of unwanted and criminal gangs whether they are militants or vandals.

” Abubakar, told one of our correspondents on the telephone on Saturday that while he would not confirm the exact casualty figure, the knew that some of the camps of the vandals were destroyed.

He gave the assurance that the military would ensure the destruction of more camps in the ongoing operation. He said, “No, we cannot confirm the exact casualty figure in the operation.

There are so many camps, and we will continue to  destroy them in that operation. “We have taken some camps. The casualties cannot be confirmed but I know that we were able to target some of their camps and locations.

” Meanwhile, in an attempt to forestall the spate of militants’ attacks, the Onijegun of Ijegun land in Lagos State, Oba Nureni Akinremi, on Friday convened a meeting at his palace. Illumination News learnt that the meeting, which was attended by all the chairmen of community development associations in Ijegun, examined the solution to security challenges posed by the militants.

A source close to the palace and who also attended the meeting told one of our correspondents that the community had resolved to hire members of the Oodua People’s Congress to man strategic locations in the neighbourhood.

The source added that operational vehicles, motorcycles and walkie-talkies would be provided for the operatives to ensure effective performance.

He said, “We have agreed to engage members of the Oodua People’s Congress for the protection of the whole Ijegun against all the attacks that claimed lives in the community.

We plan to hire 70 guards who would be deployed in various strategic points in the community.

“The guards are specifically meant to checkmate militants’ attacks but they will also be working with the existing security men in each CDA. We have budgeted N5m to ensure their smooth operations and they will start by Monday.

“People have made donations and contributions are on going in each CDA.

We want to buy three buses and at least 10 motorcycles to aid their operations. We have already bought walkie talkie for them to communicate with one another and they are well armed. By God’s grace, the buses will be available on Monday.

“The operatives are a registered security organisation and they have their uniform and identity cards.

” The source added, “Apart from that, we have resolved that from 12am till 5am, no okada rider will be allowed to operate in the community except there is an emergency.

“We also want to create awareness for all residents on the need to be security conscious. We are going to do this through distribution of pamphlets and announcements on radio stations. The abduction of the Oniba of Iba and attacks on communities in Lagos and Ogun states are very disturbing. That is why we are taking all these measures.

FG to refund N57b to Zamfara govt

(Zamfara)

 – The Federal Government says it will reimburse Zamfara State Government with N57 billion soon. President Muhammadu Buhari made the promise in Wanke, Zamfara on Wednesday when he inaugurated some roads constructed by Zamfara Government.

“I have known Gov. Abdulaziz Yari as one of the performing governors who has made landmark achievements and l hope he will sustain this to bring more development to the state.

” He said the state government had spent over N57 billion in the reconstruction of some federal roads in the state, assuring that modalities were being worked out to reimburse the state.

He said the journey to fix Nigeria was still in earnest “which is why we will continue to execute the war against corruption and recover stolen public funds to be put to correct use”, the President said.

He urged Nigerians to go into farming and animal-rearing to diversify the economy.

The President, who described Zamfara as a fertile ground where solid minerals could be tapped, also assured that government would facilitate the promotion of mining as part of efforts to diversify the economy.

Gov. Yari had requested the federal government to hasten the release of the funds the state spent in the rehabilitation of federal roads. He said the funds would be utilized to bring additional dividends of democracy to the people.

The governor thanked the president for the visit and reassured that people of the state would continue to support the administration.

Impeachment threat: It’s a huge joke taken too far, says APC

                          President Muhammadu Buhari
Abuja

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described reports of a plot by some Senators to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari as laughable and a “huge joke taken too far.

” The party was reacting to the plot purportedly issued during a closed session of the Senate, on Tuesday.

APC’s position was contained in a statement signed by the party’s National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni, in Abuja, on Wednesday.

According to him, the Party advises the Senators in question to stop what he called “this huge joke” and concentrate on their primary constitutional responsibilities of lawmaking.

He urged them to pay greater attention to discharging their legislative mandates to their constituents a task they have been elected to perform at the National Assembly.

Goodbye Cameron, nobody will miss you – EU lawmaker

Europe won’t miss David Cameron, a senior EU lawmaker in Brussels said on Wednesday as the prime minister who led Britain to the exit left office.

“The UK finally has a new prime minister,” Gianni Pittella, the leader of the centre-left group in the European Parliament said in a statement as Theresa May took over the government. “Goodbye Mr Cameron. Nobody will miss you.

” Other European politicians focused their attention on May, his successor as Conservative leader, who backed Cameron’s campaign to remain in the EU but then saw off pro-Brexit rivals once he had resigned after losing the vote on June 23.

European Council President Donald Tusk, whose job it will be to broker negotiations between May and the 27 other national EU leaders, sent a two-sentence letter of congratulation saying that he looked forward to a “fruitful working relationship”.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, a vocal supporter of a more federal EU, was quick to urge May to do what Cameron refused to do after the June referendum and formally notify the EU that Britain was indeed leaving the bloc.

“We cannot afford a long period of uncertainty. Clarity is in the interest of both Europe and the UK,” he said, adding a salute to Cameron’s “tenacity” and “strong leadership”.

Pittella, an Italian who leads the second biggest group in the European Parliament, also called on May to serve notice of withdrawal under Article 50 of the EU treaty, which sets a two-year deadline for London to negotiate an exit or simply be bounced out of the EU.

He added: “It must be clear that no negotiations will begin before this is done.

” May has said she may not trigger Article 50 for months but many officials expect tentative talks to start soon on how negotiations might work to forge a new relationship between Britain and the EU.

Pittella repeated warnings from across Europe that Britain cannot keep the benefits of access to the EU single market without following EU rules, including welcoming EU immigrants.

Abuja Airport new terminal building ready in December

                          Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja

The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, new terminal building will be ready in December and will attract more investors, says Mr Ayo Ojebola, the resident Architect for Globarch Associates.

Globarch Associates is the firm engaged by the Federal Government to provide post-contract consultancy services for the airport terminal project.

He said that the completion of the project would impact positively on aviation business in Nigeria as the airport would become a hub, because many airlines not yet landing there, would be empowered to do so.

According to him, having completed the block works, the project has attained 67 per cent completion and is now in the finishing stage.

The consultant explained that the project which started in March 2014, ought to have been completed in two years but was delayed due to some unforeseen circumstances.

“We have finished all the block works and what is left is just the finishing; and right now, the terminal building construction is like at 67 per cent completed.

“The project was supposed to have been completed since March because the project was for two years and we started it in March 2014.

“Because of some delays we had experienced, we discovered that there was the need for an extension to like December or January.

“To be precise, the December timeline is realistic and the project will be completed,’’ Ojebola said. He said that the Ebola Disease outbreak in 2014 and weather issues were part of the challenges that delayed the project. On the non-payment of fees to the consultants, he said that the Federal Government was currently addressing the issue.

The government had in 2014 awarded contracts for the construction of five new terminals in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu, to ease congestion.

The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, had in December 2015 announced that the new terminals would be ready by December 2016.

Ingrate artists who abandoned OJB in death - Wale Oluwaleimu

                                Late OJB Jezreel

One of the close friends of late OJB Jezreel, Akinwale Oluwaleimu has come out to accuse some of the artists the late music producer has helped made into stars from his studio.

Oluwaleimu revealed that these set of artists abandoned OJB in death. He said they approached most of them for financial assistance towards giving OJB a befitting burial but most of them failed to respond.

“Last week was a little hectic for me, myself and a few good men came together to burial a very good man, friend and brother of mine, Babatunde Okungbowa aka OJB Jezreel.

Jigga, as fondly called by close friends and associate had been dealing with a Kidney problem for over four years and actually had a transplant done in 2013 (kidney donated by his lovely first wife, Mabel Okungbowa ) I was also a part of the fund raising for that which he, Jigga, initially refused us to do until we convinced him otherwise, Late Muyiwa Nomoreloss Osinuga was to spearhead this drive which he did very well.

Akinwale Oluwaleimu and a friend at OJB’s candlelight

On returning from his trip to India, Fans got on different social media platforms to blast the lukewarm attitude of the Music Industry towards support for his operation, saying, with kind of money displayed by our musicians, we shouldn’t be publicly canvassing for fund to treat a man who invested a huge part of his life in support and developing talents that have made it big.

Yes, he did but are these talents grateful?

” The entertainment consultant went further to explain how they were able to source for money for his burial.

He said: “This brings me to the issue of today, His Burial.

The committee put together a cost for a befitting/deserving wake-keep and tribute night for Jigga and thought we should reach out to some of the people Jigga invested in and supported through the years for support but what we got was mostly a brick wall, I personally spoke to some ‘big acts’ and their replies were shocking. I wonder what kind of people we rear now and the wickedness in their hearts.

Jigga had touched the lives, positively, about every artiste in Nigeria directly or indirectly and I hope their hearts will prick them now that GODWIN.

For the calibre of producer Jigga was, I had imagined that all the big name producers in Nigeria would have made an impact even if it was just in making their presence felt at his tribute or burial.

Well, the tribute was fantastic without your support and that shows that God is bigger than every each of us and he will make a way where there seem to be no way. Some were so ashamed they couldn’t turn up at the tribute or burial in guilt.

Some acts even used his pictures and post for his burial but couldn’t show up to pay their last respect to the king maker…you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Even if he had offended you before he died (I know Jigga too well to know that that is near impossible) he deserves for you to forgive him in death.

” He went further to reveal how publisher of Ovation Magazine, Chief Dele Momodu contributed hugely to the burial of OJB. He wrote: “I would at this point want to thank Chief Dele Momodu, who supported us through all this, funded a huge part of the tribute night and even called me the morning of the wake keep to ask if we needed more and he sent again and again.

God bless you sir Oke ni owo hin a ma wa ni Oruko Jesu.
